How do you get someone to stop scrolling and start watching? It’s all in the visuals.

Welcome to this edition of the Create Video newsletter from the LinkedIn Guide to Creating page.

This week, we’re focusing on visual hooks, those eye-catching moments in the first few seconds of your video that make people pause, pay attention, and want to see more.?

Whether it’s a surprising image, a bold on-screen text, or a dynamic camera move, a strong visual hook can be the difference between a scroll-past and a full watch.

Let’s explore how to make your videos visually irresistible from the very first frame.

Best Practices for Video

If you want your video to stand out in a fast-moving feed, your visuals need to do the heavy lifting right away. A strong visual hook can grab attention before a single word is spoken. It’s your first chance to make someone pause and lean in.

Here are a few ways to create visual moments that instantly capture attention:

Start with movement – Motion naturally draws the eye. Quick cuts, camera shifts, or even a simple gesture can create instant interest. Example: A creator snaps their fingers and the scene changes instantly.

Use bold on-screen text – Display a key phrase or question in large, clear text. Example: “This changed how I work forever.”

Show, don’t tell – Lead with a visual that hints at the story or outcome. Example: A dramatic before-and-after shot that makes viewers curious about what happened in between.

Frame your face or subject well – Good lighting and clear framing help build connection. Example: A close-up shot with direct eye contact that feels personal and engaging.

Add a visual twist – Use props, unexpected settings, or creative transitions to stand out. Example: A creator opens a video by walking into frame wearing something surprising or holding an unusual object.

When your visuals are compelling from the very first frame, you invite your audience to stay and see what comes next. Think of your visual hook as the opening scene of a great story. It should spark curiosity and set the tone for everything that follows.

Featured Video Posts?

Standout video posts to take inspiration from.

We’re shining the spotlight on two creators who continue to post standout videos:? Lisa Kostova and Yasin M.

What makes Lisa’s video stand out?

  • She doesn’t just talk about visual hooks. She shows them in action. From holding a banana to spinning in her chair to lighting a candle, each example uses movement, props, or surprise to grab attention.
  • Her format makes the concept easy to follow and fun to watch. By repeating “this is a visual hook” with changing visuals, she creates a rhythm that builds understanding. The visuals take the lead, turning a list of tips into a hands-on demo that sticks.
  • She ends with a clear and engaging question. By asking viewers what visual hooks have caught their eye, she invites them into the conversation and encourages them to reflect on what works for them.

What makes Yasin’s video stand out?

  • He calls out the problem with verbal hooks and proves it fast, using quick stats and a dynamic skier clip to show how visual and text hooks grab attention in just two seconds.
  • His paper?cutting demo makes the concept stick, turning abstract structure into something you can see and remember by rearranging the pieces to speed up the value.
  • He punctuates the lesson by replaying the ski example in two seconds instead of eight, spotlighting an immediate before?and?after contrast that cements the takeaway and primes viewers to spot the technique in every video they watch next.
